Breastfeeding mothers are more concerned about the diet they should follow. A breastfeeding mother produces 23 to 27 ounces of milk per day, containing 330 milligrams of calcium per quart. This requires extra 500 calories per day than usual. A breastfeeding mother should not consume less than 1800 calories per day. Each time when mother feeds, she loses some liquid content from the body and becomes dehydrated. More liquid foods such as low fat milk, fruit juices with less sugar and more water should be consumed to stay hydrated and energetic. Too much of liquid may reduce the production of milk and so proper amount should be considered. Low calorie diets will reduce the production of milk. Alcohol should be avoided. If you want to drink, take one or two drinks in a week and wait for two hours after drink to breastfeed. Nutrient rich foods like vegetables, spinach, milk, lean meat should be taken. |
